Minister of Music
Dr. Robert L. Bozeman has served as Minister of Music at Anchorage Presbyterian Church since February 2019. In this role, he directs the Chancel Choir, serves as organist and pianist for worship, and assists in planning and leading worship throughout the year.
Robert believes that the primary ministry of the choir is to lead and support the congregation in singing. Under his direction, the Chancel Choir has grown to thirty members as of 2026. He has expanded the musical life of the congregation through an annual service of Advent Lessons and Carols and several services of Evensong each year, often in partnership with Anchorage's covenant partner, St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He also enjoys helping the congregation grow in confidence and joy as singers, including through the recent “Sing What You See: A Sight-Singing Workshop” for choir members and the congregation.
Robert holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Organ Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Music degree in Performance from the UMKC Conservatory of Music, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from the University of
Oklahoma. His organ teachers have included Roberta Gary, John Ditto, Clark Kelly, and Mary Ellen Sutton, and he studied choral conducting with Eph Ehly and Steven Curtis.
A significant part of Robert's work as a musician has focused on the relationship between movement and musical performance. His doctoral project, Gesture, Movement, and the Keyboard Performer, explored how efficient movement can enhance musical performance and help musicians avoid injury. His research, supported by a grant from the University of Cincinnati Graduate Research Council, led to publications in The American Organist and elsewhere. His continuing study of somatics led him to become a Bones for Life® Teacher and Trainer and, in 2022, a Mind Body Studies Practitioner. He now teaches and works with musicians to help them use their bodies more efficiently and comfortably in making music.
Robert's ministry extends beyond music. He holds the Certificate in Proclamation (preaching) from the Omaha Presbyterian Seminary Foundation and preaches regularly at Anchorage Presbyterian. He is also a certified Spiritual Director through the Retreat Center at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and a certified Labyrinth Facilitator through Veriditas, having trained with Dr. Lauren Artress.
For Robert, music is ultimately an expression of worship: a way for the whole congregation—not simply the choir or musicians—to listen, sing, pray, and encounter God together.​
